1 large skillet
1 mini muffin tin
1 oven
- 2 cups thinly sliced yellow onions
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter or vegan substitute
- 1 cup beef broth or vegetable broth for vegetarian
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves or Italian seasoning or omit
- 1 package crescent roll dough
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese or any melting or vegan cheese
Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add sliced yellow onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized, about 30 minutes.
Stir in beef broth and white vinegar and simmer for 5 minutes until most liquid is absorbed; season to taste.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Unroll crescent roll dough and cut into rectangles.
Press dough rectangles into a greased mini muffin tin to form cups.
Fill each dough cup with the onion mixture and top with Gruyère cheese.
Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden brown and cheese is bubbly.
Cool bites for 10 minutes, gently remove from tin, garnish with thyme, and serve warm.
- Caramelize onions slowly to develop deep flavor.
- Ensure filling is not too wet to prevent soggy dough cups.
- Can substitute beef broth and cheese for vegetarian or vegan options.
- Serve warm for best taste and texture.
